2kg Home Guard Seed Potatoes
Home Guard is a very popular heritage first early potato variety, well known for its reliable performance and excellent flavour. Supplied in 2kg packs, Home Guard produces round to oval tubers with smooth pale skin and creamy flesh. It is a long-standing favourite with Irish gardeners thanks to its dependable yields, good disease resistance and ability to produce tasty potatoes early in the season.
Potato Type and Growing Season
Home Guard is classed as a first early variety, making it ideal for gardeners who want an early harvest of fresh new potatoes. Planting usually takes place from late February to early March once the risk of hard frost has passed. Harvesting typically begins from June through to July, around 10 to 12 weeks after planting, depending on growing conditions.
Planting and Growing Advice
Before planting, chit Home Guard seed potatoes by placing them in a bright, cool and frost-free area to allow strong shoots to develop. Plant into well-drained soil in a sunny location, improving the ground with organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. Plant seed potatoes 10 to 12cm deep, spacing them around 20 to 22cm apart, with approximately 60cm between rows. Earth up the plants once they reach about 20cm tall to protect developing tubers and encourage a higher yield. Regular watering will help improve crop quality and reduce the risk of scab.
Harvesting and Storage
Home Guard potatoes are ready to harvest once the foliage begins to yellow and die back, usually in early summer. Lift carefully with a fork to avoid damaging the tubers. As a first early variety, Home Guard is best enjoyed fresh and is not intended for long-term storage, offering superb flavour straight from the garden.
Best Uses in the Kitchen
Home Guard potatoes are well flavoured with a slightly waxy texture, making them ideal for boiling and salads. They also work well for light roasting, producing delicious results when used as fresh new potatoes.
