How to Sow Flower Seeds for Best Results
For the best results, timing and soil preparation are key. Most flower seeds are sown in spring, after the last frost, for summer blooms, though some hardy varieties can be sown in autumn to establish early growth for the following year.
Prepare the soil by removing weeds and debris, then rake it to a fine texture. Scatter seeds thinly and lightly cover them with a fine layer of soil or compost, depending on the variety. Some smaller seeds, such as poppies or alyssum, require light to germinate, so should only be pressed into the soil surface without covering.
For more delicate varieties, starting seeds indoors in seed trays or pots can provide a controlled environment, leading to stronger seedlings for transplanting once the weather warms. Using a good-quality seed compost will improve germination rates and early root development.
Caring for Your Flower Seedlings
After sowing, keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, as too much water can cause seeds to rot before germination. As the seedlings emerge, ensure they receive plenty of light—whether through a sunny windowsill, greenhouse, or outdoor position.
Once the seedlings develop a few true leaves, they can be thinned out to prevent overcrowding, allowing the strongest plants to flourish. Feeding with a balanced liquid fertiliser every few weeks will promote healthy growth and abundant flowering.
Encouraging Continuous Blooms
To prolong flowering, deadhead spent blooms regularly. This prevents the plant from putting energy into seed production and encourages new flowers to develop. Some varieties, such as sweet peas and marigolds, will bloom continuously if regularly picked.
For perennials and biennials, allowing some flowers to go to seed in autumn can help naturalise them in your garden, leading to self-seeding flowers that return year after year.
