5kg British Queen Seed Potatoes
British Queen is a traditional and much-loved second early potato variety, especially popular in Ireland for its flavour, texture and dependable performance. Supplied in larger 5kg packs, this option is ideal for bigger gardens, allotments or anyone looking to grow a generous mid-season crop. British Queen produces smooth, pale-skinned tubers with creamy white flesh and a slightly floury texture, making it a firm favourite with home growers.

Potato Type and Growing Season
British Queen is classed as a second early variety, sitting neatly between first earlies and maincrop potatoes. Planting usually takes place from March onwards once soil conditions are suitable. The crop is typically ready to harvest after 14 to 16 weeks, providing a reliable mid to late summer harvest with excellent eating quality.

Planting and Growing Advice
Chit British Queen seed potatoes before planting by placing them in a bright, cool and frost-free location to encourage strong shoots. Plant into fertile, well-drained soil that has been enriched with organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure, choosing a sunny position for best results. Set seed potatoes 10 to 15cm deep, spacing them approximately 30cm apart, with around 60cm between rows. Earth up soil around the plants as they grow to protect developing tubers from light and to promote a healthy yield. Consistent watering during dry spells will help ensure even-sized potatoes.

Harvesting and Storage
British Queen potatoes are ready to lift once the foliage has yellowed and begun to die back naturally. Lift carefully with a fork to avoid damaging the tubers. After harvesting, allow the potatoes to dry briefly in a cool, shaded area. As a second early variety, British Queen can be stored for a period in a dark, dry and well-ventilated space, though it is also excellent enjoyed fresh from the garden.

Best Uses in the Kitchen
British Queen is prized for its rich flavour and versatility. It is particularly good for boiling and mashing due to its creamy, slightly floury texture, while also performing well for roasting and chipping. This makes it an excellent all-round potato for everyday Irish cooking.
