2kg Orla Seed Potatoes
Orla is a popular early maincrop potato variety, well known in Ireland for its reliability, clean appearance and excellent all-round cooking qualities. Supplied in 2kg packs, Orla seed potatoes produce smooth, round to oval tubers with light yellow skin and pale yellow flesh. This variety is especially valued by home gardeners for its strong natural disease resistance and consistent yields, making it a dependable choice year after year.

Potato Type and Growing Season
Orla is classed as an early maincrop variety, sitting between second earlies and traditional maincrop potatoes. Planting usually takes place from March to April once soil conditions allow. Crops are typically ready to harvest after 14 to 16 weeks, giving a mid to late summer harvest. Orla is also known for its good resistance to blight, which makes it particularly well suited to Irish growing conditions.

Planting and Growing Advice
For best results, chit Orla seed potatoes in a bright, cool and frost-free location before planting to encourage strong, healthy shoots. Plant into fertile, well-drained soil that has been enriched with organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure, choosing a sunny position in the garden. Set seed potatoes around 10cm deep, spacing them approximately 30cm apart with 60cm between rows. Earth up soil around the plants as they grow to protect developing tubers from light and to improve yields. Regular watering during dry spells will help ensure even growth and good quality potatoes.

Harvesting and Storage
Orla potatoes are ready to harvest once the foliage begins to yellow and die back naturally. Lift carefully with a fork to avoid damaging the skins. After lifting, allow the potatoes to dry for a short time in a cool, shaded area before storing. Orla stores reasonably well for an early maincrop variety when kept in a dark, dry and well-ventilated space.

Best Uses in the Kitchen
Orla is a very versatile potato with a smooth texture and mild, creamy flavour. It is excellent for boiling and salads, while also performing well for roasting, baking and chipping. This flexibility makes it a great everyday potato for a wide range of meals.
