2kg Cara Seed Potatoes
Cara is a highly regarded maincrop seed potato and a dependable choice for Irish gardens, valued for its resilience, strong yields and excellent cooking quality. Supplied in 2kg packs, Cara produces round to oval tubers with clean white skin and distinctive pink eyes. It is a particularly robust variety, well suited to variable Irish weather conditions, making it a popular option for both home gardeners and allotment growers.

Potato Type and Growing Season
Cara is a maincrop potato variety, planted from April onwards once soil conditions are suitable. It typically reaches maturity within 15 to 20 weeks, with harvesting taking place from late summer into early autumn. Known for its strong blight resistance and good drought tolerance, Cara performs reliably even in more challenging seasons and is well suited to longer-term storage.

Planting and Growing Advice
For best results, chit Cara seed potatoes in a bright, frost-free area before planting to encourage strong shoots. Plant into well-drained soil that has been enriched with organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure, choosing a sunny position in the garden. Set the seed potatoes 10 to 15cm deep, spacing them approximately 30cm apart with 60cm between rows. As the plants grow, earth up soil around the stems regularly to protect developing tubers from light and to maximise yields.

Harvesting and Storage
Cara potatoes are ready to harvest once the foliage has yellowed and begun to die back naturally. Lift carefully using a fork to avoid damaging the tubers. After lifting, allow the potatoes to dry briefly in a cool, shaded location before storing. Cara stores very well when kept in a dark, dry and well-ventilated space, making it a reliable potato for use well into autumn and winter.

Best Uses in the Kitchen
Cara is an excellent all-round cooking potato with a creamy texture and slightly waxy consistency. It is particularly good for baking and roasting, while also performing well for boiling, mashing and chipping. Its versatility makes it a great choice for everyday family meals and traditional Irish cooking.
