Squash Winter Jumbo Pink Banana

€3.75
Squash Winter Jumbo Pink Banana is a remarkable heirloom variety offered by Thompson & Morgan, known for its massive, elongated fruits with a unique pinkish-orange hue. These impressive winter squashes can grow up to 50 cm long and weigh as much as 10 kg when fully mature, making them a show-stopping addition to any garden. The flesh is rich, sweet, and deep orange, with a smooth texture that is ideal for roasting, soups, purees, and even baking into desserts. Its excellent storage qualities mean you can enjoy the harvest well into winter.

This vigorous and highly productive variety is perfect for gardeners who want a reliable crop of large, delicious squashes. Despite their size, the plants are surprisingly easy to grow and thrive in most sunny, well-drained garden locations.

Sowing Instructions:
For the best results, sow Pink Banana seeds indoors from April to May. Use individual pots filled with seed compost, sowing seeds about 2.5 cm deep on their side. Keep the pots warm at 18-21°C until germination, which usually takes 7-10 days. Once seedlings are well-established and all risk of frost has passed, harden them off and transplant them to their final outdoor position.

Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with rich, fertile soil. Enrich the planting area with plenty of well-rotted manure or compost beforehand. Space plants about 1.2-1.5 metres apart to allow plenty of room for the vines to spread. Regular watering and feeding with a high-potash fertiliser will encourage healthy growth and abundant fruiting.

Harvesting:
Fruits are ready to harvest in late summer to early autumn when the skin hardens and takes on its characteristic pink-orange colour. Cut the squash from the vine with a sharp knife, leaving a short stem attached for better storage. Cure in a warm, dry place for 10-14 days before storing in a cool, dry location. Properly cured, the squashes can last for several months.

With its eye-catching size, superb flavour, and excellent versatility in the kitchen, Squash Winter Jumbo Pink Banana is an outstanding choice for gardeners and cooks alike.
