2kg Rooster Seed Potatoes
Rooster is one of the most popular maincrop potato varieties grown in Ireland, prized for its consistently excellent flavour, high yields and superb versatility in the kitchen. Supplied in 2kg packs, Rooster seed potatoes produce rounded to oval tubers with smooth red skin and creamy yellow flesh. This dependable variety performs exceptionally well in Irish soil and weather conditions, making it a firm favourite with home gardeners and allotment growers.

Potato Type and Growing Season
Rooster is a maincrop variety, planted from April onwards once soil conditions are suitable. It typically takes around 20 to 22 weeks to reach full maturity, with harvesting taking place from late summer into early autumn. As a maincrop potato, Rooster is ideal for those looking for a heavy crop that can be stored and enjoyed well into the autumn and winter months.

Planting and Growing Advice
For best results, chit Rooster seed potatoes in a bright, frost-free area before planting to encourage strong shoots. Plant into rich, well-drained soil in a sunny position, improving the ground with plenty of organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. Set seed potatoes around 15cm deep, spacing them approximately 30cm apart with 60cm between rows. Earth up soil around the plants regularly as they grow to protect developing tubers from light and to maximise yield. Consistent watering during dry spells will help produce evenly sized potatoes.

Harvesting and Storage
Rooster potatoes are ready to harvest once the foliage has yellowed and died back naturally. Lift carefully using a fork to avoid bruising the tubers. After lifting, allow the potatoes to dry briefly in a cool, shaded area before storing. Rooster stores very well when kept in a dark, dry and well-ventilated location, making it a reliable choice for longer-term use.

Best Uses in the Kitchen
Rooster potatoes are renowned for their full, buttery texture and slightly nutty flavour. They are particularly excellent for roasting and chipping, while also performing very well for baking, boiling and mashing. This all-round versatility makes Rooster one of the most trusted potatoes for everyday Irish cooking.
