WEEE Recycling Information – Johnstown Garden Centre
At Johnstown Garden Centre, we are committed to protecting the environment and ensuring that electrical and electronic waste is managed responsibly. We fully comply with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations in Ireland, which promote the safe collection, treatment, reuse, and recycling of electrical products and batteries.
These regulations help prevent pollution, reduce landfill waste, and recover valuable materials for reuse — supporting a cleaner and more sustainable future.
Our Commitment to WEEE Compliance
Johnstown Garden Centre is committed to meeting the requirements of the European Union (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Regulations 2014. These regulations require producers and suppliers of electrical and electronic equipment to finance the take-back and recycling of WEEE resulting from the products they place on the Irish market.
In line with this commitment:
Johnstown Garden Centre will take back WEEE from customers free of charge. If you need details on returning waste electrical items, please contact us or speak with our Customer Service team in-store.
WEEE contains substances that can harm the environment and human health if not treated safely. Proper recycling ensures these materials are collected, handled and processed correctly.
Environmental Management Costs (EMCs)
Certain electrical products sold in Ireland include an Environmental Management Cost (EMC), which helps fund nationwide recycling programmes. These contributions support the safe collection, treatment, and environmentally responsible recycling of electrical goods at the end of their life cycle.
At Johnstown Garden Centre, only LED lights and bulbs attract an EMC, and the price of these items includes a €0.05 contribution to recycling costs.
This fee is already built into the displayed price of applicable items, so there are no additional charges at checkout. By including this contribution, we help ensure that LED lamps and bulbs are recycled correctly and in full compliance with Irish environmental regulations.

✓ Please keep your receipt for the new item
✓ Present the receipt at Customer Service when returning the old appliance
Battery Recycling
Johnstown Garden Centre accepts waste portable batteries free of charge, including rechargeable batteries, on a one-for-zero basis — meaning no purchase is required.
We will take back waste batteries of equivalent types to those we sell.
A dedicated recycling bin for small batteries is available in-store.
Local authority civic amenity sites also accept waste batteries free of charge.
Civic Amenity Recycling
All local authorities in Ireland must accept household WEEE and small batteries free of charge at civic amenity recycling centres.
Local authorities cannot charge gate fees for recycling WEEE or batteries.
If you prefer not to return your old items to us, you may bring them to your nearest civic amenity site for proper recycling.
Your Role in Responsible Recycling
Customers play an important role in ensuring that WEEE is reused and recycled safely. If you choose not to return your waste electrical equipment to Johnstown Garden Centre:
✓ Do NOT dispose of WEEE in your household bin
✓ Look for the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol on products
✓ Ensure WEEE is collected separately
✓ Bring it to an authorised recycling point
WEEE may contain hazardous substances. If not managed safely, these can pollute the environment and damage human health. Recycling electrical items helps to prevent pollution and allows valuable materials such as metals, plastics, and electronic components to be recovered and reused.
What Should Never Go in Household Bins
Electrical equipment, batteries, and any items displaying the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol must never be placed in household waste bins.
Always recycle electrical goods and batteries through:
✓ Johnstown Garden Centre (like-for-like after purchase)
✓ Local authority civic amenity sites
✓ Approved recycling facilities
Proper recycling supports Ireland’s environmental targets and helps conserve natural resources.
Our Environmental Commitment
Johnstown Garden Centre ensures that all WEEE and waste batteries returned to us are transferred to authorised treatment and recycling facilities. This guarantees safe handling, environmentally responsible disposal, and maximal recovery of recyclable materials.
