"Flavourful, Easy-to-Grow Shallots from Johnstown Garden Centre

Mild & Sweet Shallots

Shallots are a versatile and flavourful addition to any home garden, offering a mild, sweet taste that enhances a wide range of dishes. Easier to grow than onions and with a longer storage life, shallots are perfect for both beginner and experienced gardeners. At Johnstown Garden Centre, we stock high-quality shallot sets, carefully selected for strong growth, disease resistance, and excellent yields.

Shallots are an excellent choice for any kitchen garden, as they require little maintenance and provide high yields with minimal space. Unlike onions, which grow as single bulbs, shallots multiply in clusters, meaning each set planted produces multiple bulbs at harvest. They are also great for long-term storage, allowing you to enjoy their rich, slightly sweet flavour for months after harvesting.

When & How to Plant Shallots

Shallots can be planted in both autumn and spring, depending on when you want to harvest. Autumn planting produces an early summer crop, while spring planting results in a later summer harvest. Choose a sunny, well-drained location, as shallots do not thrive in waterlogged soil.

To plant, simply place the shallot sets 2-3cm deep, with the pointed end facing up, and space them 15cm apart in rows 30cm apart. Water regularly to help them establish strong roots but avoid overwatering, as shallots prefer light, well-drained soil.

Caring for, Harvesting & Storing Shallots

Shallots are low-maintenance and require minimal attention once planted. Keeping the area weed-free ensures they receive essential nutrients, while their low water requirements make them a great crop for drier conditions. During spring, applying a general-purpose fertiliser can help promote strong bulb formation and improve yields.

Shallots are ready to harvest when the leaves turn yellow and begin to bend over, typically in July or August. Gently lift them from the soil and allow them to dry in a warm, well-ventilated area for two to three weeks before storing. Properly cured shallots can last for months, ensuring a steady supply of rich, homegrown flavour long after harvest.
