Honeyberry - Duet , Lonicera caerulea - Haskap

Quick Overview

An edible honeysuckle from eastern Siberia that is cold hardy to - 50 C. A small shrub with an early crop of large bluish purple berries that ripen ahead of other berries. Excellent fresh eating, on ice cream, jelly, jam, juice and good for freezing. These seedless berries taste like a wild blueberry but are shaped much different. Highly recommended for everyones back yard or orchard. This variety offered is self fertile. 3 ft tall X 3 ft wide. Extremely drought tolerant. Likes well drained soil. Pick berries as soon as they are ripe. Very resistant to disease and pests.

It may be worth considering pollination by hand to increase yield of fruit. They flower late winter to very early spring when there is little pollinating insect activity. Hand pollination can be done by lightly brushing over the flowers with a small, soft paint brush.

The fruit is harvested about late-spring early-summer. The berries turns blue and develops a whitish bloom when ripe; however check to make sure that the flesh is purple-red as green under-ripe fruits can be very sour. A mature plant can produce about 6kg of fruit. It can take up to two years before you will get a crop.

PLant a few together for better pollination
