Perfume Princess, which took 10 years to develop, was raised by breeder Mark Jury.
His aim was to combine the strong growth of D. Bholua types with the fragrance and flowering performance of D. odora varieties.
During trials, Mark switched to focus on magnolia breeding and the young daphne was left forgotten in a corner of the nursery where it flourished unnoticed.
Now, it’s available to gardeners for the first time, with plants reaching 35-47in (90-120cm). Plants flower from March to April and thrive in sun or part-shade.
Pretty pink springtime flowers clothe the stems of this robust shrub and fill the garden with an exquisite perfume. Although slow growing, Daphne ‘Perfume Princess’ is well worth the wait, forming a medium sized shrub with an attractive rounded habit. This great new hybrid has larger flowers than many of its contemporaries, and their scent is divine! They form in clusters in the leaf axils along the length of the stems, so when in bloom they really put on a great show, and if a stem is cut for the vase, it will fill the room with their perfume. Height and spread: 100cm (36").
