The British Queen is a classic second early variety, characterized by smooth, pale skin and a creamy texture. It is well-suited for a variety of cooking methods, including baking, chipping, boiling, mashing, and roasting. Its smooth, waxy texture makes it an ideal choice for boiling and mashing, while it holds its shape well during roasting and chipping.
To grow British Queen potatoes, plant the seed potatoes in rich, well-drained soil in a sunny location. Prepare the soil by incorporating plenty of organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. Plant the seed potatoes 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) deep and 30 cm (12 inches) apart, with rows spaced 60 cm (24 inches) apart. Earth up the soil as the plants grow to prevent the tubers from being exposed to light, which can cause greening. Consistent watering, especially during dry spells, is essential for optimal growth.
British Queen potatoes are ready to harvest in approximately 14–16 weeks after planting, typically in mid to late summer. When the foliage starts to yellow and die back, it’s time to harvest. Carefully lift the potatoes with a fork to avoid damaging the tubers. Allow the potatoes to dry in a cool, shaded area for a few hours before storing. Store in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated space for long-term use.
With its versatile cooking potential and excellent taste, the British Queen potato is a favourite among gardeners and home cooks alike.
